Get help
Whatever you’re facing, an advocate can help. You can get support without staying in shelter, without filing a police report, and without deciding anything today.
If you’re in danger right now, call 911.
What happens when you call
A real person answers. They’ll listen, and ask a few questions to understand what you need. You decide what happens next — there’s no script you have to follow, and nothing you have to do.
What we can help with
Advocacy isn’t one thing. Some of the ways an advocate can help:
- 1Think through your options, with no pressure to choose
- 2Find a safe place to stay
- 3Fill out and file a protection order, and be with you at the hearing
- 4Apply for money the state can pay back to crime victims
- 5Be with you during a sexual assault exam
- 6Come with you to court, the doctor, or other appointments
- 7Get into housing, and get household things and clothes
- 8Emergency money when something can’t wait
- 9Make a safety plan that fits your real life
- 10Support your kids, if they’ve seen or lived through violence
- 11Get you to the right place when what you need isn’t us
Where we serve
Yankton, Bon Homme, Charles Mix, Clay and Union counties, and the southern halves of Hutchinson and Turner counties.
If you don’t live in Yankton, you get the same help. An advocate travels out to the surrounding counties.
What it costs
Nothing. Every service here is free.
What stays private
What you tell an advocate stays with us. We don’t share it with police, courts, or anyone else without your say-so.
There are two things we’re required by law to report: a child being abused or neglected, and a serious threat to someone’s life. We’ll tell you before we do anything, and we’ll walk you through it.
You can come back
People call once and never again. People call ten times over five years. People leave, go home, and call us later. All of that is normal here.
